Ninkasi Kao: Discover emerging artists

Pierre-François Cialdella, Ninkasi’s marketing and communication manager

Adjoining Ninkasi Gerland, each year the Kao hosts 150 concerts and electro evenings. What makes it so special is that it features local, national and international emerging artists.

How would you describe Ninkasi Kao’s event programme?

Each year we propose 150 dates including around 100 concerts and 50 electro evenings. The space has something of a rock feel to it but the event programme is very eclectic concerning both the style and reputation of the artists. The Kao welcomes local, national and international groups. The venue has hosted many young local artists, but also Muse, M or Moby when they first began touring.

How is the space positioned in relation to other venues in Lyon?

It's a small space with a capacity of 580 people which proposes competitive prices at between 15 and 30 euros and the chance to see emerging artists before they hit the big time. We have built up a network among local associations, which is one of our special characteristics. What's more, in addition to the Kao, in all of our cafes we propose a number of theme evenings with local artists.

What are the main events at the Kao?

Every two weeks, the Kao invites leading international DJs to host "unstructured" electro evenings. The venue also hosts the Just Rock , So Latino and of course Nuits Sonores festivals. A "Music Net Awards" competition for young talent is also organised several times a year.

Do you have any particular memories of concerts you would like to share?

There are so many of them! I particularly remember M coming along for a jam session after his concert at  the Halle Tony Garnier , which was a moment of pure magic! Nuits Sonores is also a very special event as we welcome almost 5,000 people for the occasion.
