André Manoukian, a great fan of Lyon

Hailing from the Croix-Rousse area, André Manoukian shares with us some of his favourite recommendations from Lyon.

What's your favourite district in Lyon?

I love the Old Lyon.

When you're alongside the river Saône and you see all these colourful buildings. Of all the French cities, Lyon is the one with the most "Italian" feel to it, and Old Lyon is one of the most attractive areas in Europe!

I'm also really fond of  Croix-Rousse  , the district where I was born! The  traboules  (passageways) linking different streets and passing through the high-ceilinged silk workers’ buildings really are something special to be discovered.

In your view, does a genuine Lyonnais culture exist?

Cooking is something of a religion here... You absolutely must sample the cold meat dishes and of course the legendary tablier de sapeur at least once in your life in one of  Lyon's bouchons , (traditional eateries).

There are also great chefs  in Lyon and this superb cooking is increasingly available to everyone through the city's many bistros.à la charcuterie et, surtout, au tablier de sapeur, un incontournable, à déguster au moins une fois dans sa vie !

How has the city changed?

I've seen it open up to the rest of the world over the last 20 years! Lyon is enormously attractive as it offers all the advantages of a capital city yet with the countryside so close at hand. It also enjoys an outstanding geographical location being just 2 ½ hours from the coves of Marseille and 2 hours from the world's finest mountains. The people of Lyon really are very lucky: they can visit Chamonix for a day out!
